Laser Ingrown Toenail Treatment

  • Temporary removal of ingrown toenail
  • In the case of a recurrent ingrown toenail, we often suggest removing the corner of the toenail that hurts using a laser to kill the root to prevent reoccurrence.

Remember we just remove the corner of the nail that hurts, not the whole nail. This procedure takes 15 minutes and is done in our office. Most insurance companies provide coverage for routine examinations and treatments.

We may also recommend using topical or oral antibiotics for ingrown toenail treatment, especially if the toe is infected or at risk of becoming infected.

If you experience severe discomfort in your toe, infection or redness that is spreading it is time to see our doctors!

Ingrown Toenail Symptoms Treated by Our Doctors

  • Pain and tenderness in toe along one or both sides of the nail
  • Redness around toenail
  • Swelling of toe around the nail
  • Infection of the tissue around toenail

What Causes Ingrown Toenails?

Ingrown toenails result when the nail grows into the flesh of your toe, often the big toe. Common causes of this include:

  • Heredity
  • Fungus in toenails
  • Wearing shoes that crowd toenails
  • Cutting toenails too short or not straight across
  • Injury to toenail
  • Unusually curved toenails

What Could Happen If I Don't Get Treatment?

An ingrown toenail can infect the underlying bone and lead to a serious bone infection if left untreated or undetected. Complications can become severe if the patient has diabetes because the circulation and nerve supply to the feet can be impaired. Any relatively minor injury to a foot such as a cut, scrape, corn, callouses or ingrown toenail, may not heal properly and could lead to infection. Dr. Greenberg diagnoses an ingrown toenail based on the patient’s symptoms and a physical examination of the nail and the surrounding skin.

Ingrown Toenail Prevention Recommended by Our Doctors

  1. Trim the toenails straight across

Don't curve your nails to match the shape of the front of your toe. Request our doctors to trim the nails straight across. If you have circulation problems in your feet from diabetes or peripheral arterial disease, schedule an appointment with us for professional trimming.
  2. Keep toenails at a moderate length

Trim toenails so they're even with the tips of your toes. Trimmed too short, the pressure from shoes on the toes' tissue may direct the nails to grow into the tissue.
  3. Wear shoes that fit properly

Take care to buy and wear properly fitted shoes.
  4. Wear protective footwear

If a job puts you at risk of injuring toes, buy footwear such as steel-toed shoes, that protect the toes properly.
