Foot Care Doesn't Take a Winter Break: Keeping Your Feet Healthy Year-Round in Sunny Orange County

Even though we're lucky to enjoy mild winters here in Orange County, our feet still need some extra attention during the colder months.  While we might not be battling snow and ice, factors like dry air, changes in footwear, and increased indoor heating can take a toll on our feet. As a podiatrist at Laguna Woods Podiatry Group, I, Dr. Neda Arjomandi, DPM, want to share some tips to keep your feet healthy and comfortable year-round, with a focus on those "winter" challenges that even sunny Southern California can't escape!

1. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Even without freezing temperatures, our skin can dry out in the winter. Indoor heating, combined with lower humidity, can strip your skin of its natural moisture, leading to dry, cracked feet. This can be uncomfortable and even lead to infections.

  • Make moisturizing a daily habit: Apply a thick, emollient-rich cream to your feet every day, especially after showering or bathing when your skin is still slightly damp.
  • Choose the right moisturizer: Look for creams containing ingredients like shea butter, cocoa butter, hyaluronic acid, or ceramides. These ingredients help hydrate the skin and lock in moisture.
  • Don't forget your heels: The heels are particularly prone to dryness and cracking. Give them extra attention by applying a thicker layer of moisturizer and consider using a pumice stone to gently exfoliate dead skin.
  • Consider an overnight treatment: For extremely dry feet, apply a generous amount of moisturizer before bed and cover your feet with cotton socks to help the cream penetrate deeper.

2. Footwear Matters, Even Without the Boots

While heavy winter boots might not be a staple in your Orange County wardrobe, proper footwear is still essential. Make sure your shoes are:

  • Well-fitting:  Avoid shoes that are too tight or too loose. Tight shoes can restrict circulation, cause ingrown toenails, and worsen bunions or hammertoes. Loose shoes can lead to blisters and instability, increasing your risk of falls and ankle sprains.
  • Supportive:  Good arch support and cushioning are crucial for preventing injuries and reducing stress on your feet, especially if you're active. Look for shoes with proper arch support, a cushioned insole, and a firm heel counter to keep your foot stable.
  • Breathable:  Even in cooler weather, your feet need to breathe to prevent excessive sweating and fungal infections. Choose shoes made of breathable materials like leather or mesh, and avoid wearing the same shoes every day to allow them to air out.

3. Keep Moving

Regular exercise is vital for good circulation and overall foot health.  Find activities you enjoy, whether it's walking, hiking, swimming, or dancing.  Staying active helps keep your feet strong and flexible.

  • Warm-up before exercise: Before starting any physical activity, take a few minutes to warm up your feet and ankles with some gentle stretches. This can help prevent injuries like sprains and strains.
  • Listen to your body: If you experience any foot pain during or after exercise, stop and rest. Don't push through pain, as this can lead to further injury.
  • Choose the right exercise for your feet: If you have any existing foot conditions, talk to your podiatrist about the best types of exercise for your feet.

4. Don't Ignore Foot Pain

Foot pain is never normal, even in winter. If you experience any persistent discomfort, see a podiatrist for diagnosis and treatment.

  • Common causes of winter foot pain:  In addition to dry skin, common winter foot problems include chilblains (small, itchy swellings caused by cold exposure), stress fractures from increased physical activity, and flare-ups of conditions like arthritis or plantar fasciitis.
  • When to see a podiatrist:  If you experience any persistent foot pain, numbness, tingling, swelling, or changes in skin color or temperature, it's important to see a podiatrist promptly.

5. Nail Care is Year-Round

Proper nail care is important in every season. Trim your toenails straight across and avoid cutting them too short to prevent ingrown toenails. If you notice any changes in your nails, such as thickening, discoloration, or brittleness, see a podiatrist to rule out fungal infections or other nail conditions.

6. Diabetes and Foot Care: Always a Priority

If you have diabetes, it's crucial to be extra vigilant about foot care. Check your feet daily for any cuts, sores, or blisters, and wear well-fitting shoes and socks. Regular foot exams with a podiatrist are essential to prevent complications.

7. A Little Pampering Goes a Long Way

Even though it's not sandal season, a little foot pampering can be a real treat. Soak your feet in warm water with Epsom salts or essential oils to relax tired muscles and soften dry skin. You can also give yourself a foot massage or use a foot roller to relieve tension and improve circulation.

By following these tips and being mindful of your foot health, you can enjoy happy and healthy feet throughout the year, even when the weather turns a bit cooler.
