Neuroma: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options for Foot Pain Relief

What Is a Neuroma?

neuroma is a thickening or inflammation of the tissue surrounding a nerve, most commonly found between the third and fourth toes. This condition, often called Morton’s neuroma, can cause burning pain, tingling, or numbness in the ball of the foot and toes.

Neuromas develop when the nerve is irritated or compressed over time. Although they are benign (non-cancerous), they can significantly affect mobility and quality of life.

Causes of Neuroma

Neuromas typically form due to repetitive stress or irritation to the nerve. Common causes include:

  • 👠 Tight or high-heeled shoes that squeeze the toes together

  • 🏃 High-impact activities such as running, dancing, or court sports

  • 🦶 Foot deformities like bunions, hammertoes, or flat feet

  • 🔁 Repetitive stress injuries from certain occupations or sports

  • 💢 Previous foot injuries that alter walking mechanics

Common Symptoms

A neuroma may cause:

  • Sharp, burning pain in the ball of the foot

  • Tingling or numbness in the toes

  • The sensation of “walking on a pebble”

  • Discomfort that worsens with tight shoes or prolonged activity

  • Pain relief when massaging the foot or removing shoes

Diagnosis

At Laguna Woods Podiatry Group, Dr. Neda Arjomandi will:

  1. Review your medical history and symptoms

  2. Perform a thorough foot exam, pressing on specific areas to reproduce symptoms

  3. Order imaging, such as ultrasound or MRI, if needed to confirm diagnosis and rule out other conditions

Treatment Options for Neuroma

Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms and how long they have been present.

✅ Conservative (Non-Surgical) Care:

  • Footwear changes: Wearing shoes with a wide toe box and cushioned sole

  • Custom orthotics: Relieve pressure on the affected nerve

  • Padding or metatarsal supports: Reduce nerve compression

  • Anti-inflammatory medications or ice therapy for pain relief

  • Corticosteroid injections: Reduce inflammation around the nerve

🩺 Surgical Treatment:

If conservative care fails, surgical removal of the neuroma (neurectomy) may be considered. Surgery is generally outpatient, with most patients resuming normal activities within a few weeks.

When to See a Podiatrist

You should schedule a consultation with Dr. Arjomandi if you experience:

  • Persistent forefoot pain lasting more than a few days

  • Numbness or tingling in the toes

  • Difficulty walking or wearing shoes comfortably

  • Recurring “pebble in the shoe” sensation

Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent the neuroma from worsening and help you avoid surgery.
