Warts. Those pesky little bumps that can appear anywhere on your body. While they're usually harmless, they can be unsightly and sometimes even painful. And when they pop up on your feet, they can make walking and daily activities uncomfortable.
What are warts?
Warts are small, noncancerous growths caused by a viral infection in the top layer of the skin. The virus responsible is called the human papillomavirus (HPV). There are many different types of HPV, and some are more likely to cause warts on the feet.
What do warts on the feet look like?
Warts on the feet (plantar warts) often appear as:
•Small, hard bumps: They may be flesh-colored, gray, or brown.
•Rough or grainy texture: They may have a cauliflower-like appearance.
•Black dots: These are tiny clotted blood vessels.
•Painful when squeezed: Especially when pressure is applied to the sides.
How do you get warts on your feet?
The HPV virus that causes warts thrives in warm, moist environments. You're more likely to get plantar warts if you:
•Walk barefoot in public areas like locker rooms, pools, and showers.
•Have cuts or breaks in the skin of your feet.
•Have a weakened immune system.
How can a podiatrist help?
While some warts go away on their own, others can persist and even spread. A podiatrist can diagnose your warts and recommend the most effective treatment options, which may include:
•Topical medications: Salicylic acid or other prescription-strength medications to peel away the wart.
•Cryotherapy: Freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen.
•Electrosurgery: Burning the wart with an electric current.
•Laser therapy: Using a laser to destroy the wart tissue.
•Surgical removal: In some cases, surgical excision may be necessary.
Don't ignore those warts!
If you have warts on your feet that are causing pain, discomfort, or spreading, don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with a podiatrist. Early intervention can often lead to faster and more effective treatment.
